By Joyce E Edwards Published: 10/21/2009
Puzzle games are logistical problems. In order to solve these difficulties a person needs to apply a series of thoughts and ideas to the projected problem in order to find the proper answer. Some are far more then just entertaining mind games however and can be so complicated and complex that discovering an definite answer to them is thought to be a contribution to the mathematical community.
The solutions to the puzzle games are most often never easy and while some may require figuring out a simple pattern others can necessitate the solver to put something in the correct order before the answer can be found.
Some folks are better at solving puzzles then others. Inductive reasoning comes in handy for puzzles involving patterns and order, but deductive reasoning works better for puzzles that include inquiry and discovery to find a answer.
This history of puzzle games can be traced all the way back to the 1700's. John Spilsbury developed the first jigsaw puzzle in 1760 to aid in teaching geography to students and until the 1800's this was the principal use for jigsaw puzzles.
In the early part of the 20th century the newspapers realized they could draw in more readers and subscribers by printing puzzles in the newspaper. The Sunday crossword is still popular now with many people as they drink their morning coffee.
Some of the more popular puzzle creators are names many people recognize but do not always know are associated to puzzle games. To name a few, they include Martin Gardner, Will Shortz and Sam Loyd.
Martin Gardner is most distinguished for his "Mathematical Games" column that ran from 1956 to 1981. He published over 70 books in his time and some individuals suppose he is the person behind the popular term "mathemagician" that is utilized even in the present day.
Will Shortz worked for Penny Press Magazine then as an editor for Games Magazine during which he founded the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in 1978. In 1992 he turned around and also founded the World Puzzle Championship and became the director of the United States Puzzle Team.
Sam Loyd is likely the more legendary of the three listed here. He is most remembered as a chess player and at one time was ranked 15th in the world. He cherished the game of chess and often formed chess puzzles with humorous themes to them. His affection for puzzles did bring about one failing in his chess playing capabilities however. Instead of using uncomplicated moves in an effort to win a chess game he preferred to create uncommon combination's of moves across the board. Before his death in 1911 he also claimed to have been the originator of the "fifteen puzzle" although experts say it was just an adaptation of an older puzzle instead.
Puzzle games have been a part of society for many years and today they have even made their way in to the electronics world by form of video games. Letter and word games used on computers are many times used to teach children learning to read and write while games like Tetris and Resident Evil are popular console games based on puzzle solving skills.
